Sometimes you find'll yourself in a situation from which you can’t talk yourself out and have to consider a hostile physical reaction. Obviously attacks will vary, depending on the attacker, environment etc, but some general rules can be applied to minimise potential injury.

REACT AGRESSIVELY
:

I can’t stress enough how important your initial reactions must be in the first couple of seconds of an attack.  By instantly reacting in an aggressive, dominant, verbal manner your attacker will hopefully be taken aback for a second of two, which could mean invaluable time for you to counter attack.  Try to shout as you defend yourself, as this strengthens your presence, helps you breath correctly, gives you focus and may also attract passers-by who may be able to help you.  It also demonstrates to the attacker that you are not afraid to fight back.  Like the general bully, most attackers want an easy time of it and this approach will disturb them…so carry on disturbing!

KEEP MOVING AND ATTACKING:

Obvious one this, but so true.  A moving target is harder to hit.  Try to move to the side of the opponent and quickly deliver strong hard kicks if possible to vulnerable area’s e.g. Instep, shins, knees and groin.  Strikes/blows, should be direct and continuous, don’t be afraid to hurt the attacker, strike the throat, face, eyes etc, don’t try to go for restraining techniques or try grabbing the opponents hands, as this is extremely difficult to do on a non-compliant attacker and will only hinder the attack.

Try to stay on your feet, if you fall or are taken to the ground, the same continuous, aggressive behaviour must continue.  Look for fingers to grab, flesh to pinch or gouge and get back to your feet as quickly as possible and get away. The above defensive principles may sound dramatic to some, but when faced with the cold reality of a forceful attack, you must open your mind to what will really get you out to survive safely.
